About Key Houses
If your buttons or the key housing itself are about to wear out on your car key, you can advantageously replace the key housing with a new one. It is very different from key house to key house how easy it is. Keys where the key blade itself is hidden inside the housing, flip keys, may well require a little dexterity and patience.
What is important is that if you e.g. looking at an Opel key case and looking for one with 2 buttons and seeing 2 that are fairly similar, you can’t choose the one you think is nicest. You must choose the one that is similar to what you have now. Otherwise, the electronics will not fit. Therefore, it is also not enough to look at the car model numbers we have written that the individual key housings fit. The key house you choose MUST be identical to the one you have now. There are exceptions in the form of conversion kits. Here, however, it will be clearly stated that this is a conversion kit that can give your car key a new look.
Please note about all our key cases: Electronics, battery or usable keys are not included.
All supplied keys are raw unsharpened keys. You must therefore have them sharpened by a professional before you can use them. In many cases, you can reuse your current key and move it over to the new key house. You can easily check this by taking apart your key housing. If the key is an independent part and not fixed to the housing, you can (mostly) reuse it. See further down regarding key reuse.
Although we write at the key house that it fits certain models, there may still be differences which mean that it does not fit your particular car. If your car’s model number is not mentioned there, it may well be that the key housing can be used anyway. And the other way around.
It is difficult to say clearly which key case you need based on the car’s model number. The best thing is to make a visual identification based on the pictures we have uploaded and compare them with your current key case. Take it apart if necessary and see how it looks inside. It is often just a single screw or two that needs to be removed.
Different key blades can easily be obtained for a key case. If a key case says that a key blade is included, then your current key blade must look like it in order for you to reuse your old key blade.
If you are in doubt, please contact us. We would be more than happy to help you find the right key house.
Videos
For many of our key houses, we have included videos that show how they are assembled and disassembled.
If you don’t find a video you can use, try youtube. Here there are many videos on the subject and there must be someone who can help you along the way and show you how to change from one key house to another. Recommended search term: (car brand) key fob.
Immobilizer
There is a small chip hidden in the vast majority of key housings.
It is the immobilizer and you must remember to move it to the new key house. Otherwise, you cannot start the car.
In a Peugeot key house, it looks, for example, like this:
The red arrow points to a small chip which must be moved over. It is therefore important that you move EVERYTHING to the new key house.
On a Kia / Hyundai key case it sits here:
Mazda
Volkswagen
The immobilizer can also be part of the electronics that you move together with to the new key house. The most important thing is to check that you do not leave any parts in the old key housing. Keep your old key case until you are 100% sure that the new one works as it should.
We occasionally find that the immobilizer can be glued to your key housing. This of course makes it a challenge to move it to the new key house. In those cases, you can try to see if you can reuse the part where the immobilizer is located and simply put on a new front from the key housing you ordered from bilkey.
Opening of key house
On our key housing, there is often a small screw where the logo should sit and which holds the whole thing together. That screw is not necessarily under your logo. If you want to open your key case, you need to find a tool to force the 2 parts apart.
Unfortunately, we have experienced that key housings, instead of a screw, are glued together. This of course presents a challenge, because how much effort are you ready to put into it without destroying too much.

There are a lot of do-it-yourself videos.
Re-use your old key blade
Many of our key housings come with a raw key. You can choose to have it sharpened in a key bar from your old key, or you can (often) choose to reuse your old key blade. Although the key blades look exactly the same, there may well be a difference in the socket itself which is mounted in the key housing. (The part where the button to make the key flip out is on)
(Note: It is not all keys where the key blade can be removed. It can be fixed on your old key and then you have to go to a key bar and have your new key sharpened from the old one)
Replacing the raw key with your old key is relatively simple.
The socket itself may well be different from key to key, so you cannot always move the part marked by the red arrow below. You must therefore remove the key blade itself as described further down. The arrow also points to the small split that holds the key blade itself in place.
It is different how the key blade is removed. If you have a key house where the key blade itself is hidden inside the house, you must do as below:
Turn the key at an angle of approx. 45 degrees. Here you will be able to see a small split. It is the one that holds the key blade in place. See the red arrows / circles below.
Press out the split and you will be able to remove the key blade and put your old one on instead. Secure it with the split again. The split can be very firmly stuck, so in some cases it has to be pressed.
If the key blades have different sizes in the part that is mounted in the socket, you either have to file it a little so that it fits, or have the key blade sharpened by a professional based on your old key.
If necessary, use a hammer and a small nail to knock it out.
If you are not completely comfortable with it, you can take your new key housing and your old key to a key bar and have the new key leaf sharpened.
It may also be necessary if your old key blade does not fit into your new key housing, but they usually do. However, there are exceptions and even if the key blades are the same on the outside, they can be different in the socket itself, which is mounted inside the key housing. If you are in doubt, try removing your key blade and check. We are happy to send pictures the other way.
REMEMBER: You always have a 30-day right of return. Even if you have disassembled the key housing.
Reassemble the key housing
If your key housing is of the flip type, i.e. the key pops out when you press a button, it is important that you reassemble it correctly.
The back of the key housing must often be turned on so that the spring is tensioned. See the picture below or one of our videos.
The spring must also sit correctly down in the holder. If it can rotate freely, it is not seated correctly.
